Live Facial Recognition - Deployments within Hackney |
||
|
Since July 2024, we have deployed Live Facial Recognition across several locations with the London Borough of Hackney. Deployments have taken place in Dalston, Hackney Central and Shoreditch.
Live Facial Recognition technology can be used in a number of ways by the Met, including to prevent and detect crime, find wanted criminals, safeguard vulnerable people, and to protect people from harm.
We deploy Live Facial Recognition to reduce criminal offences and arrest offenders who are shown as being wanted in connection with a crime or where they have failed to attend court for an offence they have been charged. We aim to deploy the LFR vehicle at busy locations in order for the maximum impact in reducing those wanted by the police or courts.
With most deployments, we see limited impact to local community members who have grown more supportive of the deployments. We also staff the deployments with our local Neighbourhood Ward police officers so local communities continue to recognise their local police officers. We have multiple good success stories in regards to the use of Live Facial Recognition including persons arrested for a variety of serious offences including Burglary, Sexual Offences and Theft. We have a duty to do as much as we can to safeguard communities and the use of Live Facial Recognition is one of the many ways we can do this, it is supported by the Commissioner of the Met and we know it is having an impact in reducing offending more widely when deployed to locations.
It's important to note that we have never seen a 'false positive' indication on any person flagged by the technology within Hackney since our first deployment in July 2024. This means that every indication has been 'Live' and accurate. The deployments are temporary by nature and do not see any technology 'installed', a mobile van with LFR technology and officers in uniform supporting this is how this will look to the local community when it is deployed.
I am pleased to share the following overview of the results from our deployments:
• 87 Arrests in total • 42 interventions with Registered Sexual Offenders ensuring compliance with the Sexual Offences Act orders • 1st in London to stop a male who was subject to a Stalking Prevention Order to ensure compliance
Further information can be obtained by visiting the Met Police Website that features a large section on Live Facial Recognition including the testing process, Home Office approval, policy documents and records of the deployments. More information can be found below via the link to the Met Police Website:
Further deployments are planned for 2026.
Kind Regards,
